The mayor of the Balışeyh district in Kırıkkale province, Turkey, Hilmi Şen, was shot dead this morning in an armed attack. His driver was also killed in the incident, while three other people were injured.

The assailant, reportedly the mayor’s nephew, allegedly told police after his arrest that he murdered the mayor because he failed to keep a promise to hire him at City Hall.

Hilmi Şen was elected mayor with the Islamist New Prosperity Party in the March 31, 2024, elections but resigned from the party this past July.
