In a post, the EMY director mentioned the upcoming wave of rainfall, noting that a “high-altitude low (at 500hPa)” will be over the Ionian Sea on Friday night, moving eastward.
This system will affect eastern and southern areas from Friday night into Saturday, primarily impacting Thessaly (Eastern Thessaly – Pelion), the Sporades, and Central and Northern Evia. The weather events will be confined to the southeastern areas by Saturday evening.
In a second post, Mr. Kolydas shared EMY’s forecast maps every six hours until mid-next week, highlighting the passage of consecutive weather disturbances across the country.
Marousakis: Intense Phenomena and Flooding Incidents in Attica
Simultaneously, Klearchos Marousakis warned of severe weather events starting this afternoon (15/11) in many parts of Greece.
According to the meteorologist, Attica will also experience intense weather phenomena and possible flooding incidents.
Severe Weather Expected During the Day Today, severe weather will develop in several regions of Greece, characterized by heavy rain, thunderstorms, and sudden wind gusts. Hail or significant lightning activity may also occur, with an increased risk of flooding in certain areas.
The western and central parts of the country will first experience this weather deterioration. By the afternoon, these phenomena will spread eastward, impacting the eastern and southern regions.
Regions like Central Greece, Thessaly – Sporades, Evia, the Peloponnese, Cyclades, Dodecanese, and Crete are at heightened risk for flooding.
If we were to highlight the most vulnerable areas due to this new wave of severe weather, it would be a zone east of the Pindus mountain range and south of Halkidiki. While there is local risk further west, forecast data indicates a greater supply of severe weather to the eastern parts, making the events more prolonged.
Attica is among the regions at risk for intense phenomena and potential flooding from this afternoon until about midday on Saturday.
Following this, illustrative rainfall maps from our forecasting systems are provided.
Today’s Weather From early on, rain and isolated thunderstorms will occur in parts of Western and Northern Greece, sections of the Aegean, and Western Crete.
By noon, the intensity of these phenomena in the west will increase, progressively impacting more regions. By the evening, intense weather events will be observed in central and eastern mainland areas, the Sporades, and parts of the Aegean.
Snowfall is expected in central and northern mountainous areas, with lower elevations in Western Macedonia experiencing snow by late evening.
Temperature ranges will be as follows: Western Macedonia -2°C to 8°C, other northern areas 2°C to 12-14°C, Thessaly 6°C to 14-16°C, Epirus 9°C to 18-19°C, other mainland regions 9°C to 18-20°C, the Ionian Islands 11°C to 17°C, Sporades and Northern/Northeastern Aegean Islands 11°C to 16-17°C, other Aegean islands and Crete 15°C to 21-22°C, with maximums locally reaching 25-26°C in Crete. Note that minimum temperatures in central and northern mainland areas will be recorded in the evening.
In the Northern Aegean, northeast winds will blow at 4-5 Beaufort, gradually strengthening to 6-7 Beaufort. In other parts of the Aegean, southwesterly winds at 3-4 Beaufort will gradually increase locally to 5 Beaufort, with the afternoon seeing a shift to northwest winds with a slight further increase. Northwesterly winds at 5-6 Beaufort will prevail in the Ionian Sea.
Forecast for Tomorrow (16/11)
In the eastern mainland (excluding Eastern Macedonia and Thrace) and the Aegean islands, expect increased cloud cover with local showers and isolated thunderstorms. The phenomena may be intense in certain areas like Thessaly (especially the eastern parts), the Sporades, and northern and central Evia. For the rest of the country, there will be scattered clouds, occasionally thickening, with local showers and thunderstorms in the Ionian Sea and western mainland. The northern mainland will see a quick weakening of the phenomena, which will gradually lessen elsewhere as well, becoming confined to Crete and the central and southern Aegean.
A few snowfalls are expected in the mountainous areas of the central and northern mainland.
Winds will blow from the north, ranging from 4 to 5 Beaufort in the west, 5 to 6 in the east, and 7 to 8 Beaufort in the central and southern Aegean.
Temperatures will drop from north to south, falling 4 to 6 degrees below the seasonal averages. In central, northern, and eastern mainland regions, temperatures will range from 4°C to 13-15°C. In the Ionian and western mainland, temperatures will be between 10°C and 16-19°C, and in the Cyclades, Dodecanese, and Crete from 12°C to 19-21°C, with Crete reaching up to 21°C locally.
Forecast for Sunday (17/11)
In the eastern and southern regions, there will be temporarily increased cloud cover with local showers and possible isolated thunderstorms until midday, particularly in Crete and the southern parts of the Cyclades and Dodecanese. The rest of the country will have generally clear weather.
Winds will be from the north, blowing at 3 to 5 Beaufort in the west, 4 to 5 in the east, and 6 Beaufort in the Aegean, with local gusts reaching 7 Beaufort in the morning.
A slight temperature rise is expected.

Temperatures will rise, particularly in the western parts of the country.
