Father Giorgis passed away following a severe traffic accident, plunging the local community of Zaros in Heraklion, Crete, into mourning.
According to cretapost.gr, the 79-year-old priest had been fighting for his life in the Intensive Care Unit for 12 days but succumbed to his critical injuries on Sunday, November 24.
His funeral is scheduled for today at 3:30 PM at the Church of Saint George in Zaros. The body will be laid in the church early in the day, allowing friends and parishioners to pay their final respects.
The Accident
The incident occurred on November 13, when Father Giorgis was driving on the first kilometer of the Moires–Tympaki road. His vehicle collided with another car, resulting in severe injuries for the priest.
Emergency responders from EKAV rushed to the scene and transported both the 79-year-old priest and the other driver to the hospital. Father Giorgis suffered critical injuries and was immediately admitted to the ICU.
Meanwhile, the second driver sustained minor injuries and was not in danger.
