Showers and thunderstorms combined with a drop in temperature are expected this coming weekend, according to meteorologists’ forecasts.
The weather will change from Friday, when the phenomena will start, as localized showers are expected in western northwestern Greece.
A notable change in the weather in the country is forecast for the weekend, with showers and thunderstorms possibly heavy in places.
Snow will fall in the mountains and probably in semi-mountainous areas of Western Macedonia.
According to the forecast of meteorologist Thodoros Kolydas, from Friday onwards, phenomena will start in the west and north.
The temperature will drop over the weekend and gusty winds will prevail locally, the EMY director noted in his post.
Weather: We’re surrounded by “cold lake”
“We are surrounded by a cold lake,” meteorologist George Tsatrafillas writes in his forecast for the weekend.
“With the current forecast data, there are increased chances that the weather in the country will deteriorate significantly over the weekend due to a cold air region (cold lake),” Mr Tsatrafyllias writes and continues: “The main features of this change will be:
– Powerful storms within the Aegean Sea, northern Greece and the west (mainly the coastal parts).
– Thick snowfall even in cities of western Macedonia.
– Many strong winds (north winds in the Ionian, south winds in the Aegean)
– The drop in temperature by 4-6 degrees.”
The weather on Wednesday
Generally clear weather. In the morning and evening hours visibility will be locally limited. Winds will be variable, light and only in the Dodecanese will blow northwest up to 5 Beaufort. The temperature will rise slightly further. It will reach 15 to 17 degrees Celsius in the central and northern areas and 18 to 20 degrees Celsius in the rest of the country. Early in the morning in the northern continental areas there will be frost in places.
The weather on Thursday
Generally clear weather with a few clouds in the west and north, gradually increasing and light local rain mainly in the Ionian Sea. In the morning and evening hours visibility will be locally limited. Winds will be light variable and from the afternoon in the west south winds up to 4 Beaufort. The temperature will not change significantly. It will reach 14 to 16 degrees Celsius in the northern mainland, 18 degrees Celsius in the central mainland and the northern Aegean and up to 20 degrees Celsius in the rest of the country. Early in the morning in the northern mountains and semi-mountains there will be frost in places.
The weather on Friday
In the west increasing clouds with local rain and occasional thunderstorms. In the rest of the country a few clouds that will gradually increase and from the afternoon hours showers and sporadic thunderstorms will occur in the north and eastern Aegean, while from the evening local showers will occur in the rest of the country and mainly in the Cyclades and Crete. During the morning and evening hours visibility will be locally limited. Winds will blow from southerly directions 3 to 5 Beaufort, while from the evening hours in the north they will shift to northerly 4 to 6 Beaufort. The temperature will not change significantly.
The weather on Saturday
Unsettled weather with showers and thunderstorms, possibly heavy in places, mainly in the west, north and eastern Aegean. Snow will fall in the central and northern highlands. Visibility will be locally limited during the phenomena.
Winds will blow south at 5 to 7 Beaufort and in the west and north from the north at 5 to 7 and locally in the northern Aegean at 8 Beaufort. The temperature will drop in the north.
The weather on Sunday
Unsettled weather with showers and thunderstorms. Snow will fall in the mountains of central and northern Greece, as well as in Euboea and the Peloponnese.The phenomena will gradually decrease in the west, while it will probably be strong in places in the north and the eastern Aegean. Visibility will be locally limited during the phenomena. Winds will blow in the west and north from northerly directions at 4 to 6 Beaufort and in the northeast at 7 to 8 Beaufort. In the remaining areas, winds will blow from southerly directions at 4 to 6 Beaufort and locally in the east at 7 to 8 Beaufort with a tendency to weaken from the afternoon hours. The temperature will drop in almost the whole country.
