The Thessaloniki Metro is now a reality and has been handed over to the citizens, who had been eagerly awaiting it…

After the inauguration ceremony, which took place earlier at the impressive Pylea Depot, the metro opened its doors to welcome the public.

As seen in the videos and photos, many citizens had gathered early at all the stations of the project, waiting patiently for the signal to start the routes and board the first trains.

Residents of Thessaloniki, as well as people who traveled from other cities to be in Thessaloniki on this day, boarded the trains, took photos, captured the historic moments, and spoke of a day of joy for the city.”

The use of the metro will be free from today, Saturday, until December 3rd, after which the ticket price will be 60 cents. The price for a bundle of 10+1 regular tickets will be 5.80 euros. The journey from Nea Elvetia to the city’s Railway Station takes 17 minutes. A total of 13 ticket booths and 104 automatic ticket vending machines are available across all metro stations.

Ticket issuance and reloading are fast and easy through the machines, which accept cash payments, as well as debit or credit cards. At the staffed ticket offices of the operating company THEMA, located at the metro stations, passengers can also personalize their cards.

Operating hours

The metro will operate from 5:30 AM to 00:30 AM daily, while on Fridays and Saturdays, its hours will extend until 2:00 AM. Initially, trains will run every 3.5 minutes during peak hours, and in the future, with the addition of the Kalamaria extension and 15 more trains, the frequency will be reduced to every 90 seconds.
