Wanting to enhance the sense of security of its citizens, the municipality of Athens will implement Safe Athens.
This is an application, developed by the DAEM, which enables anyone moving within the boundaries of the municipality to immediately report several potential emergencies or natural disasters.
- The application allows the user to notify by SMS (or push notification):
- To his/her nearby contacts, providing his/her location and movement on a map (live tracking).
- To the police in case of an attack, by sending his location, his movement on a map (live tracking), and his data.
- His selected contacts confirm that he is okay at any time, either after he has overcome a danger or for daily updates.
- His selected contacts for assistance by waving the device, with information about his location and movement on a map (live tracking).
In addition, the user can:
- Activate the alarm, attracting the attention of those around him, in order to offer help in case of emergency. If the alarm remains activated for 30 seconds, it automatically sends an SMS or, if contacts have the app, sends a push notification to the selected contacts, including their location and movement on a map (live tracking).
- Make a virtual call, indicating that he is talking to someone close to him. This feature can be used proactively in cases of potential danger, as the user will appear not to be alone, creating the feeling that a “witness” is listening.
The application was presented for the first time today, during a meeting between Athens Mayor Haris Doukas and the president of the Federation of Deaf People of Greece, Konstantinos Simpsis, and secretary general Ioannis Stoufis.
“Security is the top commodity, the inalienable right of every citizen. In this direction, we provide a comprehensive digital shield of protection free of charge,” Dukas said: “The SafeAthens application is also the first in Greece to address our deaf fellow citizens. It is an important tool to make them feel more secure in their everyday life. At the touch of a button, the user can easily inform their loved ones and the competent authorities, providing their exact geographical location and requesting assistance.”
