Karayvaz was murdered on commission because of his journalistic status, court rules

"The failure to extract valuables from the victim demonstrates that the motive for the attack was not robbery," the lengthy court ruling said

Newsroom December 19 07:47

The verdict in the case of the murder of journalist Jiorgos Karavazin in April 2021 outside his home in Alimos, was published by the Mixed Jury Court of Athens, about five months after the announcement of its verdict from the bench. In their verdict, judges and jury accept that George Karaiwaz was murdered on demand because of his journalistic status. “It was a case of a murder on demand which was connected to his (the victim’s) journalistic status and led the perpetrators to commit this crime against him,” reads the multi-page decision of the court, which at the end of last July had declared the two defendants in the case innocent by a majority vote.

Specifically, the multi-page court decision states: ‘The failure to extract valuables from the victim demonstrates that the motive for the attack was not robbery, and the absence of any other motive, as well as the relationships which the victim had acquired to obtain information, show that this was a murder for hire which was linked to his journalistic status and led the perpetrators to commit this offence against him (…). And from what was proven by the hearing (…) it is proven that the cause of death of the above-mentioned was wrongly listed as an industrial accident in the decision of the director of the National Social Security Fund (…), number 156/25-11-2021.”

This decision has become final as no appeal or appeal has been filed as requested by the family of the deceased journalist, stating in their statement that the court that tried the accused for the murder of the journalist, did not properly assess the evidence and testimonies and made an incorrect interpretation of the law.
