British authorities have revoked rapper Stormzy‘s driver’s license for a period of nine months after he was convicted today by the British judiciary for talking on the phone while driving his Rolls-Royce in London in March 2024.
The judge disapproved of the rapper, aged 31, for driving “dangerously and irresponsibly” before announcing the suspension of his licence and a fine of £2,010 (€2,423).
Stormzy, or Michael Ebenezer Owo Jr by his real name, was arrested on March 7 in broad daylight in Kensington. A plainclothes officer knocked on the window of his vehicle and told him: “Get rid of the tinted windows and put your phone down,” he was reported at Wimbledon Magistrates’ Court in southwest London.
The British rapper, who had pleaded guilty, was not present at the hearing.
Stormzy was also arrested on October 17, 2023, this time behind the wheel of a Lamborghini Urus, whose tinted windows only allowed 4% of light to pass through, far less than the 70% required. He had already been reprimanded on this issue.
The rapper was fully aware of his responsibility and apologizes, said his lawyer Peter Chemiski.
