A trio of secret Russian satellites launched earlier this year have released a mysterious object into orbit, sparking the interest of observers and analysts.
On February 2, 2025, Russia launched three satellites named Kosmos 2581, 2582 and 2583 from the Plesetsk Cosmodrome using a Soyuz-2.1V rocket. These satellites were placed in near-polar orbit, about 585 kilometers above the Earth.
In March, the satellites exhibited interesting behavior, possibly conducting proximity operations, i.e., approaching other objects in space.
On March 18, the US Space Force recorded a new object in orbit, possibly released from Kosmos 2581.
Russia has not provided details on the mission of these satellites, as many “Kosmos” missions are classified.
It is estimated that the released object could be used for a variety of purposes, including military experiments. Alternatively, it could be scientific cargo or the result of a breakup, although in such cases many pieces of space debris are usually observed.
