The “journey” of the Greek term of office on the United Nations Security Council for the 2025-26 term takes shape with the official induction ceremony of the New Non-Permanent Members, which will take place at the headquarters of the international organization at 19.00 Greek time (12.00 US time).
The Permanent Representative to the UN, Ambassador Evangelos Sekeris along with his counterparts from Denmark, Somalia, Pakistan and Panama will participate in the ceremony, which will include the raising of the flags of the five newcomers to the Security Council next to the flags of the existing members comprising the five Permanent Members (China, Russia, the United States, France, the United Kingdom) and another five Non-Permanent Members (Slovenia, Algeria, South Korea, Guyana, Siena Leone) whose term of office ends in 2025.
Greece’s participation in the UN Security Council as a Non-Permanent Member gives Greece the opportunity to showcase its diplomatic capital by actively participating in shaping decisions on global issues such as peace, development, security in volatile regions and human rights.
In an environment of multiple global challenges, conflicts and international volatility, the top priorities for Greece’s participation in the Security Council include peaceful dispute resolution, respect for international law, climate change and security, women, peace and security, the protection of children in armed conflict and maritime security.
Athens’ commitment to these priorities is demonstrated by Greece’s solidarity in the struggle of Ukraine to defend its sovereignty and territorial integrity, as well as by our country’s active policy in the Middle East in order to contain the humanitarian crisis. Greece will reinforce these priorities through a series of actions and initiatives, which will include the major and critical countries of the world.
