A woman and her 10-year-old daughter had a harrowing time on New Year’s Day when her husband, of Albanian origin, entered the country illegally, went to her house, broke the windows to break in through the window, and when he failed he damaged parked cars.
The man who was arrested on New Year’s Eve was brought before the Autonomous Single Member Plenary Court Volos on Thursday, where he asked for a deadline to hire a lawyer. However, he appeared in court yesterday without a lawyer as he claimed their lawyer was in Larissa. He asked for a new adjournment and the request was denied.
According to his ex-wife, the 45-year-old, on New Year’s Eve, went to her house after consuming a large amount of alcohol and broke the windows, terrorizing their 10-year-old daughter.
When she asked him to leave, the defendant got into his car and crashed into two parked cars, causing damage.
When located by police authorities, the 45-year-old resisted arrest and refused to submit to a breathalyzer test.
The accused yesterday apologized and admitted that he had consumed alcohol before going to his first wife’s house. He further admitted that he had entered the country illegally on foot about 20 days ago. The reason why he caused the damage to his child’s mother’s house, he claimed, was because he wanted to celebrate their daughter’s birthday with them, but she would not let him.
The court found the 45-year-old guilty of illegal entry into the country, domestic violence, violence against officials, and refusing to submit to a breathalyzer test, sentencing him to 18 months in jail, a fine of 3.700 euros, and the withdrawal of his licence for two months, with the appeal not retaining its suspensive effect.
