According to a government decision, the funeral of Kostas Simitis will be held at public expense and honours will be paid to the acting Prime Minister. At the same time, the country will honour his memory with a four-day national mourning period.

Interior Minister Thodoris Livanios, on the occasion of the loss of former Prime Minister Kostas Simitis, expressed the state’s appreciation for his significant contribution to Greece.

“Costas Simitis was a politician who was twice honoured by the Greek people with the office of Prime Minister. He tried, sometimes with great success, sometimes with less success, to change the country, responding to the challenges of the times,” he said, underlining the deceased’s commitment to his duties.

The minister praised the personality of Kostas Simitis, referring to an academic with a wealth of work and a leading figure in the anti-dictatorship struggle. “A university professor with rich academic work, a leading figure of the anti-dictatorship struggle, he has been walking all these years with courtesy and ethics,” he said.

Mr. Livanios also referred to the two historical achievements that bear the stamp of Costas Simitis, namely Greece’s accession to the eurozone and Cyprus’ entry into the European Union. “We hold, above all, the two historical achievements that bear his personal stamp: The country’s accession to the eurozone and Cyprus’ entry into the European Union,” he noted. He expressed his sincere condolences to the family of Kostas Simitis.

“Our condolences to his family, his dearly beloved children, his family, his loved ones, and his family’s condolences.
