Former Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro has been invited to the inauguration of Donald Trump as President of the United States on January 20 in Washington. The far-right Brazilian politician is seeking the return of his passport, which he surrendered to Brazilian authorities following a court order as part of an investigation into his alleged involvement in an attempted coup in 2023.
Bolsonaro has been barred from holding any political office in Brazil until 2030 and faces criminal charges related to the alleged coup attempt.
He denies all wrongdoing.
Under an order from a judge of Brazil’s Supreme Court, Bolsonaro handed over his passport in February 2024.
The invitation to Trump’s inauguration was confirmed by Bolsonaro in a post on his account on the platform X and by his advisor, Fabio Wajngarten, who told Reuters that the former president wishes to be in Washington on January 20.
In his post on X, Bolsonaro stated that he feels “honored to have received the invitation.” He also mentioned that his lawyer, Paulo Bueno, has formally requested Supreme Court Justice Alexandre de Moraes to return his passport for the trip.
