Newsroom January 8 11:57

The need for a ceasefire in Gaza and the release of hostages was emphasized by Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis during his remarks at the opening of the trilateral summit between Greece, Cyprus, and Egypt, held in Cairo.

“We must focus on what is happening in Gaza. We need to work towards a ceasefire and, of course, the release of the hostages to pave the way for restarting momentum towards a two-state solution,” said the Prime Minister.

Earlier, the Greek Prime Minister held a bilateral meeting with Egyptian President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi.

At 14:20, the leaders will make statements to the press.

A key component of this cooperation is the Greece-Egypt power interconnection project (GREGY), which will establish Greece as an energy bridge linking Egypt with Europe.

Regional developments, with an emphasis on Syria, will be among the topics discussed. The Prime Minister is expected to reiterate Greece’s position on the need for an inclusive process involving all Syrians and to stress that the new Syrian leadership must demonstrate in practice its respect for international law and the protection of the rights of all religious and ethnic minorities.

It is worth noting that Kyriakos Mitsotakis’s last visit to Cairo took place in March 2024, as part of a joint visit with European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen and other European leaders to sign the EU-Egypt Strategic and Partnership Agreement. Greece played a leading role in this initiative, underscoring the strategic importance of Egypt’s stability for Europe, as well as Cairo’s crucial role in managing migration flows to European countries, (updated).
