Mitsotakis in Cairo – His meeting with Al Sisi – Let’s attempt a ceasefire in Gaza and the release of hostages (update)

The Greece-Cyprus-Egypt trilateral summit has begun – Syria and energy on the Prime Minister’s meeting agenda

Newsroom January 8 11:57

The need for a ceasefire in Gaza and the release of hostages was emphasized by Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis during his remarks at the opening of the trilateral summit between Greece, Cyprus, and Egypt, held in Cairo.

“We must focus on what is happening in Gaza. We need to work towards a ceasefire and, of course, the release of the hostages to pave the way for restarting momentum towards a two-state solution,” said the Prime Minister.

Earlier, the Greek Prime Minister held a bilateral meeting with Egyptian President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi.

At 14:20, the leaders will make statements to the press.

Message from the 10th Greece-Egypt-Cyprus Trilateral Summit Held on Wednesday in Cairo

A message emphasizing the strategic importance of the Greece-Egypt-Cyprus partnership as a pillar of stability during a period of upheaval in the Middle East and amid regional and international crises is expected to be conveyed by Kyriakos Mitsotakis, Abdel Fattah El-Sisi, and Nikos Christodoulides at the 10th Greece-Egypt-Cyprus Summit in Cairo. The trilateral summit takes place at a time when the geopolitical landscape of the Middle East is undergoing significant changes, and the situation in Syria remains fluid.

According to sources, the Prime Minister will hold a private meeting with Egyptian President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi before the start of the summit.

The three leaders are expected to deliver a message of strengthening cooperation across a broad range of sectors, with a particular focus on energy and energy security. A key component of this cooperation is the Greece-Egypt power interconnection project (GREGY), which will establish Greece as an energy bridge linking Egypt with Europe.

Regional developments, with an emphasis on Syria, will be among the topics discussed. The Prime Minister is expected to reiterate Greece’s position on the need for an inclusive process involving all Syrians and to stress that the new Syrian leadership must demonstrate in practice its respect for international law and the protection of the rights of all religious and ethnic minorities.

It is worth noting that Kyriakos Mitsotakis’s last visit to Cairo took place in March 2024, as part of a joint visit with European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen and other European leaders to sign the EU-Egypt Strategic and Partnership Agreement. Greece played a leading role in this initiative, underscoring the strategic importance of Egypt’s stability for Europe, as well as Cairo’s crucial role in managing migration flows to European countries, (updated).
