“We do not use private companies to do favors for friends,” said Meloni about Musk’s SpaceX

The Italian Prime Minister emphasized that such technology is not provided by a public entity and that, in any case, there should be no prejudices against Musk and his companies

During a press conference she held today, Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni referred to reports concerning a possible agreement between the Italian government and “SpaceX,” owned by Elon Musk, which provides telecommunications systems through satellite connection.

“We do not use private companies to do favors for friends, our point of reference is the national interest, and I have never spoken to Musk about this specific issue,” the Italian Prime Minister emphasized. She also added, “The SpaceX system allows secure communication with embassies and with Italian missions abroad,” but “even I do not yet have a clear opinion, and the whole issue is in its initial phase of examination.”

The Italian Prime Minister also highlighted that similar technology is not provided by a public entity and that, in any case, there should be no prejudice against Musk and his companies. “In my view, the interventions for which George Soros is responsible are clearly more pronounced than those of Elon Musk,” she notably said.

Giorgia Meloni expressed her satisfaction with the release and return to Italy of journalist Cecilia Sala, who had been arrested two weeks ago in Tehran. Referring to the case of Iranian engineer Mohammad Abedini, who was arrested in Milan on December 16 and charged with arms trafficking under a U.S. warrant, the head of the Italian government stated, “His case is being examined by our Ministry of Justice. It should be discussed with our American friends.”

“I do not view cabinet reshuffles positively. Matteo Salvini would be an excellent Minister of the Interior, but the same applies to the work of the current minister, Matteo Piantedosi,” Meloni said, referring to the possibility of Salvini returning to the ministry after his acquittal in the Sicily trial, where he had been accused of deprivation of liberty for migrants.

The Italian Prime Minister also emphasized that the two closed centers for asylum seekers that her country created in northern Albania are ready to reopen. Referring to the criticism her government has faced regarding this initiative, she added:

“Perhaps we should focus more on detaining mafiosos, not migrants. There are reasons that lead me to believe that the majority of EU member states will support our position before the EU Court regarding the issue of safe countries of origin for asylum seekers.”

Finally, when asked if she intends to run again after the end of the current legislative period in 2027, Giorgia Meloni answered: “I do not know, it is a tiring job. It is a decision I will make when the time is right, evaluating the results I will have achieved.”
