The Complaints Mechanism of the Ministry of Immigration and Asylum is an innovative initiative for the protection of fundamental rights, implemented at the national level.
Greece is the only country in the European Union that has established the role of the Commissioner for the Protection of Fundamental Rights. This role, which is reinforced by the Independent Office of the Commissioner for the Protection of Fundamental Rights, attempts to ensure the collection and preliminary assessment of complaints about alleged violations of fundamental rights of third country citizens, according to a statement by the ministry.
Since the launch of the Complaints Mechanism on September 26, 2023, the platform has received more than 29,235 visits, and a total of 119 complaints have been submitted, of which 27 were submitted in 2023 (from September 26 to December 31) and 92 complaints in 2024.
Complaints were submitted in the following ways:
– Forty-one via email message.
– Seventy-six through the online form on the Mechanism’s platform.
– Two by sending the form via email.
The Complaints Mechanism enhances transparency and the protection of fundamental rights by ensuring the prompt registration and effective management of complaints related to potential violations during entry, reception, or international protection procedures.
