According to meteorologist Klearchos Marousakis, the weather will become wintry with a polar cold mass arriving in our country with snow in the mountains of the central and northern part of the country, perhaps even lower in Macedonia, Thrace, and Thessaly. He reassured us about a normal winter pattern and that we needed it to feed the water table as well.
Kolydas: Snow will fall at lower elevations
In agreement with the meteorologists’ general assessment of the weather that from Sunday there will be snowfall in areas of northern Greece, the director of EMY, Thodoris Kolydas, appears to be in agreement.
According to his post on X “the criteria of the upper atmosphere (Temperatures at 500 and 850 hPa) are met – even if marginally – and this will result in many areas to snowfall even at lower altitudes.”
However, regarding forecasts for specific areas, such as Thessaloniki, Kolydas asks “to wait another two days.”
For his part, Giorgos Tsatrafyllias, in a post, mentions the cities that have a high chance of snow from Sunday night to Monday afternoon.
The cities are:
Veroia
Edessa
Kavala
Komotini
Kilkis
Thessaloniki
Group of Western Macedonia: (Kastoria, Kozani, Grevena, Grevena, Florina).
As Giannis Kallianos said on Mega’s main newscast, a gradual deterioration of the weather is expected from Sunday with rain, thunderstorms, strong north winds up to 6-8 Beaufort, snowfall, and a drop in temperature of 6 to 8 degrees Celsius.
In fact, in areas of Western Macedonia, the mercury will dip up to 14 degrees Celsius. On Monday (13/1) and Tuesday (14/1) snow will fall – according to the forecast – in lowland areas in Macedonia, Thrace, and Thessaly, but also large cities of Western Macedonia, such as Florina, Kastoria, Ptolemaida, Kozani, Grevena, as well as in western parts of the prefecture of Thessaloniki and Kilkis. It is not excluded that it will snow in Thessaloniki or, if it does not snow, it will most likely sleet.
The municipalities of Thessaloniki are on alert for possible snow
The municipalities of the prefecture of Thessaloniki are on alert for the possibility of snow, even in the city, next Sunday, according to the National Meteorological Service’s forecasts so far.
With 21 snow removal machines and a sufficient supply of 2,000 tons of salt, the municipality of Pylaia-Hortiatis is on alert for any eventuality, as Hortiatis is the first spot to “whitewash” in the city. In case the forecasts come true, an SMS will be sent to the citizens, informing them of the protection measures and the municipal areas that will remain open for the public as part of the alert.
The central municipality’s machinery is ready, as is the salt just in case, and if necessary, based on how the weather develops, there will be modifications to the green and blue bin collection schedules.
