The Israeli authorities today released the names of 95 Palestinian prisoners – the majority of them women and minors – who could be released this Sunday as part of the first exchange with Israeli hostages held by Hamas.
“The release of the detainees (…) will not take place before 4 p.m. on Sunday,” the Justice Ministry said.
Israel’s security cabinet has given the green light to a ceasefire agreement in the Gaza Strip, which will also have to be approved by the Israeli government. The agreement provides in the first phase for the release of 33 Israeli hostages and the release of several hundred Palestinians held in Israeli prisons.
The list includes 70 women (one is a minor) and 25 men, nine of whom are under the age of 18. According to ministry information, the youngest is 16 years old. Only seven of them were arrested before October 7, 2023, the day Hamas launched its unprecedented attack on Israeli territory.
Among the women is Khalida Jarar, a member of the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine (FPLP), considered a “terrorist organization” by Israel, the US and the European Union. She was arrested in late December in the West Bank and is being held without charge. In September 2021 she was released from prison after serving a two-year sentence in an Israeli prison for participating in FPLP activities.
According to Benjamin Netanyahu’s office, the release of the Israeli hostages will begin on Sunday.
