Moments before Donald Trump officially becomes President of the United States, leaks continue regarding the record number of presidential executive orders he is expected to sign today.
Donald Trump will cross the threshold of the White House for his second term in the Oval Office. The 47th US president made it clear during his four-day inauguration celebrations in Washington that immigration would be at the top of his priorities.
Donald Trump has also made it clear that in his first moments back in the Oval Office he will sign hundreds of presidential executive orders on issues he “committed” to on the campaign trail. One of them – the most important, according to his entourage – is the issue of illegal immigration, as the new US president has stated that he wants to kick out all illegal immigrants.
According to sources cited by the Washington Post, at least four presidential executive orders will address this issue. According to the US media, Trump will sign an executive order that will instruct, on the southern US border with Mexico, in addition to special police units, and the military. This move requires congressional approval and not only the presidential order is not enough, but the Republicans control the entire House of Congress and no objection to the president’s wishes is expected.
In yet another executive order, Trump will ask the military leadership to prioritize “sealing” the U.S. border over even the ongoing wars in Ukraine and the Middle East. With a third executive order, Trump will attempt to make the deportation of refugees and immigrants automatic even if they wish to apply for asylum and, in conjunction with the fourth executive order, always according to WP, will attempt to revive the “Remain in Mexico” plan, which Trump failed to make federal law in his first term.
Under Trump’s plan, people from Mexico who wish to apply for asylum would be able to do so from the neighboring country’s territories, not when they cross the U.S. border.
