Art exhibition by Foteini Skandami

"The Little House on the Prairie" is the title of the first solo exhibition by the painter, who is on the autism spectrum – Conveying messages of optimism through a feast of colors

Newsroom January 27 01:30

An honors graduate of the Athens School of Fine Arts (ASFA), the neurodiverse painter Foteini Skandami is inaugurating her first solo exhibition today, January 25th, titled “The Little House on the Prairie” at the Artshot – Sophia Gaitani gallery, curated by Alexandra Kollarou. Through her art, the young painter communicates landscapes drenched in color, radiating optimism.

The Little House on the Prairie

Foteini is neurodiverse, meaning she is on the autism spectrum. For her, painting is both an innate tendency and a fundamental communication code, connecting her inner world with the outside one. Through her art, she shares landscapes, thoughts, ideas, and images that exist in her mind.

The artist has developed her own deeply unique visual style, borrowing nothing from others. Unpretentious yet instantly recognizable, Foteini’s narrative brushwork balances between representation and imagination, creating a singular harmony between the two. Her works emerge almost instinctively, shaped by her experiences.

In The Little House on the Prairie, she invites us to share a piece of her personal world. Her magical landscapes are both fantastical and familiar. Her universe is an endless explosion of colors, filled with recurring patterns and impressive details.

“…Beyond familiar compositional play and chromatic eloquence, transcending the Euclidean design space and ASFA’s technical rigor, Foteini Skandami’s work is a uniquely expressive venture, remarkable in its distinctiveness,” says her professor and former ASFA rector, Panos Charalambous, about her work.

The meadows, brimming with endless flowers, are a visual feast and a reminder that after hardship comes bloom, that life is beautiful and full of color. The exhibition’s core message is one of optimism. The artist’s hope is for everything around her to flourish and for warmth to reach everyone’s hearts. Through her work, Foteini brings spring—both metaphorically and literally—into the heart of winter, into ours.

A Note from ASFA Rector Dr. Erato Chatzisavva

“It is with great joy and honor that I welcome the exhibition of Ms. Foteini Skandami, titled The Little House on the Prairie. This exhibition represents the personal contribution of a talented young artist whose artistic virtues stood out early, shaped by her dedication and sensitivity.

Ms. Skandami’s works are a celebration of colors, bursting with freshness and creativity. With a deliberate touch of naïveté, her art draws inspiration from memories of her childhood and youth. The title of the exhibition, The Little House on the Prairie, evokes the imagery of the popular 1970s television series, which the artist became familiar with through its reruns. Locations like the “Walnut Grove” farm take on new roles on Ms. Skandami’s canvas, serving as sources of optimism and creative expression.

My warmest congratulations to Foteini for her work and her steadfast commitment to painting. I wholeheartedly wish her continued inspiration and dedication on her artistic journey. Best wishes for the exhibition’s success—I am certain it will inspire and move all visitors.”
