Norwegian authorities have seized a Norwegian-flagged ship with an all-Russian crew on suspicion of involvement in damage to an underwater fiber optic cable in the Baltic Sea.
The seizure was carried out at the request of Latvian authorities, according to the police in Tromsø, northern Norway. “There are suspicions that the ship was involved in serious damage to a fiber optic cable in the Baltic, between Latvia and Sweden,” the police stated in an announcement.
The ship belongs to a Norwegian company and sails under the Norwegian flag. According to authorities, it was operating on a route from St. Petersburg to Murmansk, in the Arctic Circle.
Earlier this week, Swedish authorities seized another vessel suspected of damaging a data cable running through the Baltic Sea, connecting Latvia.
