Unusually strong anticyclone brings lasting winter – Weekend weather

Gale-force northern winds in the southern Aegean up to 8 Beaufort – Where it will rain and where it will snow

Newsroom February 7 07:56

Winter will remain in full force until mid-February, with the biting cold continuing across the country.

According to the director of the Hellenic National Meteorological Service (HNMS), Thodoris Kolydas, temperatures will stay slightly below seasonal norms, with strong northerly winds in the Aegean. Winds will reach 7 to 8 Beaufort locally in the Aegean until Saturday, then slightly ease to 6 to 7 Beaufort from Sunday. In terms of weather phenomena, scattered showers are expected in the east and south, with light snowfall in mountainous areas.

After an exceptionally warm January, cold air masses are affecting the southern Balkans and Greece. While this weather shift is normal for the season, an unusually strong anticyclone over northeastern Europe will keep temperatures low in Greece until mid-month, according to Meteo.

The map shows:

  • Atmospheric pressure at sea level, highlighting the center of the strong, cold anticyclone over western Russia
  • The distribution of cold air masses around the anticyclone
  • The flow of cold air masses toward Greece

This situation is driven by the expansion of the Siberian Anticyclone westward, combined with high-pressure systems over Scandinavia, which formed due to intense low-pressure activity in the North Atlantic Ocean.

In short, atmospheric circulation in the Northern Hemisphere will maintain the cold for several days in Greece. Temperatures will be 5-7°C lower than normal for the season. It is noted that the 1,500-meter altitude level is used in meteorology to analyze air mass movements.
