Geology professor Abraham Zelilidis had argued that seismic activity off Santorini is linked to volcanoes. The University of Patras professor, in a post today, appeared reassuring and said the “risk has diminished”.

“Now that I believe that the risk has diminished because a new volcano is not born in an instant, that I do not expect an earthquake greater than 5.5, and because there is now the Aegean Sea recording the eruptions in the greater Anudros area, and the machines in Kolumbo and Kameni, I think you no longer need my involvement. I will let you, my friends, know if anything new comes up and you should be the first to know,” Zelilides said.

Abraham Zelilides’ entire post:

Dear friends,

Now that the intensity and frequency of earthquakes in Santorini have started to decrease, but mainly because almost everyone is now talking about volcanic activity, uplift, upheavals and displacements, I decided to stop giving interviews on radio and TV about these issues. They will listen to me, if they are interested, about the topics I am researching and scientifically working on.

My view on the seismic sequence in Santorini has been the same from the beginning and to this day, namely that the earthquakes were the result of volcanic excitation.

My positions have often been attacked by the “experts” who are active in the area, through research projects and follow the developments closely, calling me many times a “fantasist”. We can often make wrong assessments, but when we do, it is good to admit the errors in our assessments.

New 4.9 magnitude earthquake strikes Skiathos – Felt in Attica

A total of 51 earthquakes have been recorded, after the 5.7 Richter in Crete

Over the last 3-4 days I have mentioned many times that something new seems to be emerging in the Anudros area and that we are not in danger from Colombo and Kameni, again with data that they reported to us, a view that they have slowly begun to adopt.

Now that I believe that the risk has diminished because a new volcano is not born in an instant, I do not expect an earthquake greater than 5.5, and because there is now the AEGAIO recording the eruptions in the greater Anudros area, and the machines in Kolumbo and Kameni, I think you no longer need my input.
I will let you, my friends, know if anything new comes up and you should be the first to know.
