11 Celebrities who chose to leave Hollywood for a more peaceful life

The reasons that led them away from the comforts and glamour of the entertainment industry

Newsroom February 19 01:40

Many famous faces, despite the dazzling lifestyle Hollywood offered them, decided to move to quieter areas in search of a different way of life. While some owned luxurious multi-million-dollar mansions, the relentless paparazzi, high cost of living, and fast-paced daily life drove many well-known entertainment figures to relocate.

As a result, several celebrities found happiness in rural areas of the U.S. or picturesque European towns, far from the glare of the entertainment industry and the noise of big cities. Here are 11 stars who moved away from Hollywood, explaining the reasons behind their drastic life change.

Amanda Seyfried

Amanda Seyfried moved to the Hudson Valley for a quieter life. The Mamma Mia! star realized she preferred life on a farm, so she bought one and now spends most of her time there.

Richard Gere

Richard Gere revealed his decision to move to Spain during a November 2024 interview on The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon. With a touch of humor, he said: “My wife is Spanish – is that a problem for anyone here?”

It’s worth noting that Gere has been married to Alejandra Silva since 2018. Speaking about his wife, he added: “Of course, I’ll come back! My wife is Spanish and gave me seven years here, so now we’ll spend a few years in Madrid.”

He also mentioned that their bilingual children would thrive growing up there.

Ellen DeGeneres

Ellen DeGeneres and Portia de Rossi, known for their significant real estate dealings, recently decided to leave Montecito, California, and settle in the English countryside, specifically in the Cotswolds. According to The Wrap, their decision was influenced by the 2024 U.S. presidential election and Donald Trump’s re-election.

Eva Longoria

Eva Longoria also considered relocating after the elections, expressing her intention to split her time between Spain and Mexico with her husband and son. She told Marie Claire: “The atmosphere had already changed before the pandemic. After COVID, things got worse. I don’t want to speak badly about California, but I feel like that chapter of my life has closed.”

Zayn Malik

British singer Zayn Malik has lived in the Pennsylvania suburbs for years. In an interview with Elle, he explained his decision: “I’m a nature lover. I fell in love with the landscape and the peace.”

Malik also revealed that he moved when his then-girlfriend Gigi Hadid became pregnant. “It was the perfect place for our child to grow up. We garden, cook, and fish together,” he said.

Mark Wahlberg

Mark Wahlberg moved from Hollywood to Nevada to provide a different future for his children. Speaking on The Talk, he explained that the decision was about creating better living conditions for his kids.

“My daughter is into horseback riding, my son plays basketball, and my youngest is into golf. This life change has benefited them a lot,” he said.

Gwen Stefani

Gwen Stefani and her husband, Blake Shelton, relocated to Tishomingo, Oklahoma. She told People about the new chapter in their lives, saying:

“Our daily life there is filled with chores, just like my mother used to do. I don’t love the humidity or the bugs, but the nature there is incredible – it connects you to God.”

Tom Selleck

Blue Bloods star Tom Selleck has been living on a ranch in Ventura County, Southern California, since 1988. He told People:

“Being in nature and working on the ranch keeps me balanced.”

Mark Ruffalo

Mark Ruffalo chose to settle in Sullivan County, New York. In an interview with Nowness, he reflected on his new life away from Hollywood’s spotlight:

“Our goal was simplicity. We asked ourselves: why do we need so much stuff?”

Michael Keaton

Michael Keaton acquired a massive estate in Montana. Speaking to CBS News, he explained that the move fulfilled a childhood dream.

“It was my dream as a kid. When I bought the estate, I realized that nothing really belongs to us. We’re just tenants on this earth,” he said.
