Vasilis Kalogirou: Authorities “comb” the area where his body was found, searching for clues about his route

His funeral will take place today at 12 noon – Both roads leading near the spot where the 39-year-old was found, at the foot of the hill, are under investigation

Newsroom February 19 08:26

It has been 48 hours since the body of 39-year-old Vasilis Kalogirou was discovered on a hill in Perachora, Tyrnavos. The questions that arose from the very first moment remain unanswered: How did the missing man end up in the rocky area, and most importantly, how did he get there?

Investigating All Possibilities
Larissa’s Security Department is trying to untangle the mystery of this case, searching for evidence 50 days after the 39-year-old’s disappearance was reported. The first step taken was deploying a drone to map the area. Efforts are also being made to collect video footage, but since this is a rural area, obtaining such material is particularly difficult.

Near the spot where the 39-year-old was found are the DEYAL water boreholes that supply Larissa with water. Investigators sought footage from there, but in communication with the water company, police were informed that there are no surveillance cameras at the site. Moreover, security officers are inspecting both roads that could be used to reach the area by car, leading near the spot where the 39-year-old was found at the foot of the hill.

The forensic examination conducted yesterday revealed that the 39-year-old passed away 2-3 days after his disappearance. However, coroners have not ruled out any scenario, including that of foul play—if it occurred—resulting from asphyxiation or strangulation. Toxicology and histopathology tests have been ordered, which may shed light on additional details to aid the investigation. What is certain, however, is that the advanced decomposition of the body did not facilitate the discovery of further evidence.

How Did He Get There?
If Vasilis Kalogirou had reached that location on foot, he would have had to walk at least 12 kilometers along the banks of the Pinios River—a route that is undeniably challenging in parts, as the riverbanks are not accessible everywhere.

The spot where he was found on the hill is nearly two kilometers from the nearest point of the Pinios River, according to local livestock farmers who spoke to protothema.gr. However, one of the most pressing questions remains unanswered: Why was this man found in that specific area, 12 kilometers behind the initial search zone?

In the case of foul play, authorities are examining how he could have been transported to the location. If he arrived in the area by car, two parallel roads could have provided access, both leading to the nearest point—at the foot of the hill.

One road passes by the shepherd’s pen where the body was discovered, while the other runs by the DEYAL boreholes on the opposite side of the hill.

Police are investigating all these possibilities, trying to find evidence of how the previously missing man ended up in that location.

Vasilis Kalogirou’s funeral will take place today at 12 noon at the Church of Saint Achillios in Larissa, in an atmosphere of grief over his loss. Relatives and friends will bid their final farewell, while the questions surrounding his death remain unanswered.
