Dead pets and fish in a playground in Thessaloniki

Municipal crews rushed to Aegeou Park in Kalamaria for disinfection

Newsroom February 26 05:42

Residents of the Aegeou Street park, in the Byzantio area of Thessaloniki, were confronted with a shocking and disgraceful scene.

Unknown individuals placed dead pets, fish, and rodents early in the morning inside the playground, around the park, on benches, and on the paved areas, according to the Municipality of Kalamaria.

The municipal cleaning service was immediately alerted, and a crew led by Deputy Mayor of Cleaning and Recycling, Mairi Tsirampidou, was dispatched to the park. The Municipality of Kalamaria swiftly initiated the necessary procedures, informing the police and the Intermunicipal Shelter for Stray Animals of Eastern Thessaloniki (SYPPAZATH).

After the removal of the dead animals by the responsible authorities, a municipal cleaning crew carried out a thorough disinfection and deep cleaning of every square meter of the park, including all playground equipment, ensuring that the space was safe and clean for the public once again.

In an official statement, the Municipality of Kalamaria expressed outrage and strongly condemned this act, pledging full cooperation with law enforcement authorities to identify and bring the perpetrators to justice.

“The protection of public spaces and the safeguarding of public health are self-evident and non-negotiable values for the administration of the Municipality of Kalamaria and all its citizens,” the statement concluded.
