The ongoing investigation by ELAS into those who participated in the riot after the large gathering for Tempi at Syntagma on Friday afternoon was reported by a police spokeswoman, Constantia Demoglidou, explaining that in addition to the 72 arrested, “there is enough material of the Hellenic Police from which other people are identified, which will then be brought to justice. We have their picture before they cover their features. It is an ongoing process and will be done in the coming days.”
Regarding how the rioters moved, Demoglidou said that “these individuals were not moving in groups, but we saw individuals in groups of two or three at most moving and heading towards the rally point, which was the Constitution. We did not see any grouped individuals.”
In fact, as he noted, speaking to Alpha, “we didn’t just see Molotov cocktails. We are talking about improvised incendiary and explosive devices. Something that is not only dangerous for police officers and these people need to understand that. It was dangerous for our fellow citizens as well. I was in the operations center from the first moment and had a view from above in all the places where people were gathered.”
Asked again about those arrested for the riots, the spokeswoman said that “there is a criminal history, there is a history of charges and arrests for some of the people who were brought in yesterday. They are individuals not just from one group but from three groups. These individuals as soon as the speeches were over they covered their features and prepared for the attack on the police officers.”
Speaking of the police stance, he described that “initially we chose a defensive stance to give time to the people that other police officers were trying to channel towards the Hilton. After we determined that the citizens had withdrawn from the scene of the attack, appropriate means of repulsion were used,” while regarding the use of the water cannon long after the first incidents in Syntagma Square, he replied that “among the demonstrators were not only peaceful citizens but also people who had participated in the earlier incidents. At some point they exceeded a thousand people who participated in the riots, as we saw in different places police officers now being attacked near Vouliagmeni Avenue, near Kolokotronis. They were found in different places and were basically looking for police officers to attack them and cause trouble.“
