Kiev strikes Moscow with drones just before US-Ukraine meeting in Saudi Arabia

At least one person was killed and three others injured

Newsroom March 11 11:28

At least one person has been killed and three others injured in a major attack by Ukrainian drones in Moscow and its surrounding area overnight, according to local authorities.

Regional governor Andrei Vorobyov said the victims were located in the towns of Vidnoye and Domodedovo, on the outskirts of the Russian capital. At least seven apartments in an apartment building that was hit were damaged.

Moscow’s mayor, Sergey Sobyanin, said that 73 drones headed for the city were shot down, and that debris from one drone damaged the roof of a building.

Following the attack, a suburban train network was suspended and flight restrictions were imposed at Moscow’s airports. In particular, restrictions were imposed at the major airports of Sheremetyevo, Domodedovo and Vnukovo – which serve millions of passengers annually.

According to the BBC, this is one of the biggest attacks on the Russian capital region since the invasion of Ukraine in February 2022. It came hours before a crucial meeting of US and Ukrainian representatives in Saudi Arabia aimed at ending the war between Russia and Ukraine.

In a post on social media, Governor Vorobyov posted photos allegedly showing one of the damaged apartments and burned vehicles in a parking lot on the outskirts of Moscow.
