The process of issuing new ID cards has begun as all citizens are required to get new ones. Each ID card will have a Personal Number, which is the element for verifying individuals dealing with public sector bodies, and will be issued compulsorily to anyone who has a Tax Identification Number (TIN) or Social Security Number (SSN). Before being issued a new ID card, citizens will have to obtain the Personal Number through the new digital platform myinfo on Gov.gr.

It should be noted that the Personal Number of the citizen will be the VAT number plus three additional data, one letter, and two numbers, which will be selected by the citizen himself on the special myinfo platform.

The citizen will initially enter the myinfo platform to form his/her unique Personal Number, which will consist of one letter of the alphabet, which should also be available in Latin (i.e. K, M, N, O, etc., but not Ps, Th, Z, etc.), two numeric digits and his/her full Tax Identification Number (TIN).

In particular, the citizen will select two of the three additional alphanumeric elements to be added to his number (the letter and a number), while the myinfo platform will select the third element (a number). The entire personal number will now be stored in the new ID cards. The deadline is August 2026.

The changes in appointments
As the Minister for Digital Government said, a much larger movement is expected by the time the Personal Number is issued. “At the same time, we have also prepared a new system to facilitate the operation of the police, a system for appointments. So all this will be launched alongside the introduction of the Personal Number. A little patience,” Papastergiou said.

In case a mismatch (error) in the way a citizen’s information is written (e.g. surname, name, date of birth, etc.) is found through myinfo, a warning will appear on the computer screen saying that in the Citizen’s Register, you appear this way, while in the Police Register you appear differently. It will even urge the citizen to correct his/her details immediately so that they are the same everywhere. It should be for a single time, if there is such a serious issue, the citizen should visit the registry office where he is registered so that the correction can be made on the spot.

Along with the new ID cards, the Ministry of Digital Governance in cooperation with the Ministry of Citizen Protection created a new way of authentication much more powerful, providing the opportunity for citizens who wish to do so to obtain new strong passwords (those who want to will be able to keep the old passwords), in order to enter Taxisnet, Gov.gr and other digital platforms with greater security.
