Russian President Vladimir Putin has reaffirmed his commitment to strengthening Russia’s presence in the Arctic, warning that Moscow will defend its interests in the region amid growing geopolitical tensions. “Russia has never threatened anyone in the Arctic,” Putin stated, adding, however, that his country is ready to protect its national interests by any necessary means.
He revealed that the number of troops deployed in the Arctic Circle will increase significantly, as part of an effort to bolster Russia’s military presence in the region. This announcement comes as Moscow seeks to assert control over the Northern Sea Route, a strategically significant shipping corridor through the Arctic Ocean.
It is worth noting that Russia is shifting its trade focus from Europe to Asia due to Western sanctions imposed after its invasion of Ukraine. In this context, utilizing the Northern Sea Route is considered crucial for the country’s trade and energy supply chains.
