No truth to bread price hike rumors, says commerce secretary

Easter table prices expected to remain similar to last year

Newsroom April 1 04:30

Rumors about an imminent increase in bread prices have been dismissed by Sotiris Anagnostopoulos, Secretary General of Commerce and Consumer Protection. Speaking on Proto Programma 91.6 and 105.8, he clarified that there is no indication of rising prices in the near future.

Regarding concerns from bakers about flour costs, Anagnostopoulos pointed out that flour prices have not increased compared to previous peaks, making price hikes unjustified. He also urged consumers to be vigilant, comparing prices and switching suppliers if necessary.

On Easter shopping, Anagnostopoulos reassured that the cost of traditional Easter products, including lamb, will remain close to last year’s levels. He emphasized that market fluctuations are normal but do not justify excessive price increases.

Authorities will conduct strict inspections to ensure fair pricing, particularly in preventing unjustified profit margins. He warned businesses against exploiting inflation concerns, stating that penalties for unfair pricing practices will be severe.

Ultimately, despite ongoing speculation, market conditions do not support significant price increases, and consumers are encouraged to make informed purchasing decisions.
