The new Timeless Museum of Trikala will house the history and archaeology of the city, representing a significant project of the Ministry of Culture that is on the path to implementation. The total budget for the museum, which will be located in the facilities of the former Support Brigade (TAX.YP), exceeds 12,000,000 euros.

The study for the repair, modernization, and conversion of the building into a museum aims to structurally and functionally upgrade the existing shell, as well as adapt it to meet the needs of a modern museum. Specifically, it focuses on modernizing the building’s functionality by upgrading the internal layout to accommodate the new usage, structurally restoring it to meet today’s demands according to the regulatory framework, installing necessary electromechanical systems and infrastructures required for the operation of a modern museum, energy upgrading, and adapting the building to the technical specifications necessary for optimal energy efficiency, while also ensuring accessibility for people with disabilities in all areas of the building.

The permanent exhibition of antiquities at the Timeless Museum of Trikala is expected to be developed on the first floor of the building, with a total area of approximately 580 square meters. It will be organized into three sections, following the layout of the spaces, with the introductory section in the center and two large halls on either side. The design of the exhibition does not require structural interventions on the shell. The granted building will house, on the two upper floors, the offices of the Trikala Antiquities Ephorate and the necessary support spaces, such as reception, gift shop, cloakroom, café, event space, storage rooms, conservation laboratories, and other auxiliary services.

A key morphological and museological element enhancing the sense of the region’s topography consists of smaller and larger exhibition constructions, whose geometry reflects abstractly the relief of the area, including the hills of the plain and the higher mountain masses. The exhibition equipment of the museum includes display cases and pedestals, special constructions for displaying exhibits, as well as digital application equipment. The design of the equipment’s supervisory materials and the overall layout of the exhibits allow accessibility for wheelchair users.
“The goal of the Ministry of Culture is to upgrade and multiply the links in the great chain of museums in our country, so that the unique cultural profile of each place is showcased through the prism of sustainable management. This vision is also served by the creation of the Timeless Museum, in the facilities of the former TAX.YP in Trikala. The building of the former Support Brigade, as well as the immediate surrounding area that was transferred to the Ministry of Culture, following the signing in December 2020 of the leasing agreement for the buildings for 99 years between the Ministries of National Defense and Culture, is expected to develop the history and archaeology of the city from ancient times to the modern eras,” emphasizes Culture Minister Lina Mendoni, adding: “At the same time, the existing building stock in the city of Trikala is being utilized, and the former Pouliou Camp is highlighted. Concurrently, the Timeless Museum, along with the Osman Shah complex, the Kursum Mosque, the Tsitsanis Museum, the remnants of Ancient Trikka, and the Asclepius, will create a unique cultural route in the heart of the city, intimately connected to the daily life of the citizens and its economic development. I would like to thank the Region of Thessaly and Regional Governor Dimitris Kouretas for their collaboration in establishing the Timeless Museum of Trikala. The city is gaining an additional cultural pole and an extremely important development resource.”
Construction of the camp that will host the Timeless Museum of Trikala began in 1929 and was completed after a decade. It is located on the slopes of Prophet Elias hill, near the traditional settlement of “Varousi” and beneath the Byzantine castle of the city. This pre-war building was initially intended to be a hospital but was utilized for military purposes. The four-story building was transferred to the Ministry of Culture by the Ministry of National Defense to host the Timeless Museum of Trikala and its supporting functions, along with the surrounding area of approximately 4,750 square meters. Its state of preservation necessitated structural, energy, and functional upgrades, as well as ensuring total accessibility for individuals with disabilities, to meet modern requirements for its reuse as a museum shell.
