Two powerful consecutive earthquakes shook Istanbul on Wednesday afternoon. The first quake occurred at 12:49 local time with a magnitude of 6.2, followed shortly after by a 5.0 magnitude aftershock.

At the same time, Efthymios Lekkas, president of the Hellenic Organization for Earthquake Planning and Protection (OASP), speaking to SKAI, referred to a seismic event that occurred in a “challenging area” and noted that a sequence of tremors is expected.

Erdogan’s Message After the Earthquakes in Istanbul

Following the strong earthquakes that struck Istanbul today, the strongest of which measured 6.2 on the Richter scale, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan stated that he is closely monitoring the developments and wished his citizens a speedy recovery.

“I send my wishes for a swift recovery to our citizens. We are closely following the developments,” he said.

Meanwhile, Interior Minister Ali Yerlikaya, in a statement on his personal social media account, said:

“A 6.2-magnitude earthquake occurred in Silivri, in the Sea of Marmara, Istanbul. The quake was felt in neighboring provinces as well. AFAD and all relevant agencies have launched on-site investigations. I wish our citizens affected by the earthquake a quick recovery. May God protect our country and our nation from disasters.”
