The GSEE, ADEDY, and PAME have declared a 24-hour strike today in honor of the labor First Day.

The centre of Athens will be inaccessible gradually from 9:30 am due to the rallies and rallies. It is noted that the GSEE for the Labour Day will be held together with the Labour Centre of Athens at 11:00 am on Thursday, 1 May at Claythmonos Square, AΔEDY, at the same time at Korai Square, while PAME will gather at 10:30 am at Syntagma Square.

The strike is also being joined by workers of the Mass Transport, while ships will be tied up at the ports.

How the Metro will move

Specifically, workers on the Metrowill hold a work stoppage from the start of the shift until 9 am and from 3 pm until the end of the shift. At the same time, by order of the National Police, the stations “Syndma” and “University” will remain closed, and trains will pass through them without stopping.

In detail, according to STASY, on Lines 2 & 3, the stations will open at 9 am, and the last trains will depart:

  • from Anthoupoli to Elliniko at 14:42,
  • from Elliniko to Anthoupoli at 14:37,
  • from Municipal Theatre to D. Plakentias at 14:44,
  • from D. Plakentias to Municipal Theatre at 14:36,
  • from the Airport to the Municipal Theatre, the first train will leave at 09:10 and the last at 13:58,
  • from the Municipal Theatre to the Airport, the first train will depart at 09:06 and the last at 13:54.

As for the ISAP (Metro line 1), trains will remain at a standstill throughout the day as its workers have decided to go on a 24-hour strike.

Work stoppages on buses-trolleybuses, 24-hour strike on the tram

No trams will remain without the capital due to the 24-hour strike by workers.

In a statement, the Attica Tram Drivers’ Union asks for the understanding of the public for the inconvenience that will be caused to their travels, stating that it “fights for a better future for all workers in fixed transport”.

Workers on buses and trolleybuses will also participate in the strike action with work stoppages.

According to announcements by the OASA Workers’ Union and the Union of ELPAP Workers, buses and trolleybuses will run from 9:00 to 21:00 due to work stoppages (from the beginning of the shift to 09:00 and from 21:00 to the end of the shift).

Buses are expected to run normally throughout the day on suburban routes, which have been allocated by OASA.

24-hour strike on trains

The Panhellenic Federation of Railway Workers and Fixed-Track Vehicles (POS-MST) also participates in the 24-hour nationwide strike announced by the General Union of Trade Unions for May Day, with a unanimous decision, “paying tribute to the dead workers of SIKAGO, but also to those who later sacrificed for a better life.”

Ships in the ports

The ships will remain tied up at the ports as the Maritime Federation (PNO) participates in the nationwide, all-employer 24-hour strike declared by the GSEE, in all categories of ships.

The mobilization begins at 00:01 on Thursday and ends at 24:00 on the same day.

The messages of the GSEE-ADEDY

“For the trade unions and the working people they represent, May Day is a day of strike, a symbol of recognition of rights, and a struggle to improve working conditions. The vision of Chicago workers for a better, more dignified life is still relevant in an era of shrinking labor rights and over-concentration of wealth and power in a few elites,” the GSEE stresses in its statement.

“This year’s May Day finds workers confronted with precision, with the housing crisis, with the rapid deterioration of their labour relations. It finds society unprotected, as basic public goods are sold off, and health and education are turned into a commodity for the few. On May 1, we join our voices in honouring the timeless and global struggle of the working class for dignity at work, fair wages, and quality of life.

That is why we continue to demand our collective agreements, proactive policies on precision and the housing crisis, and determination of the minimum wage through free collective bargaining and not through government decisions. We demand stronger state supervision in the workplace to ensure that the law is respected and to stop the blacklist of accidents and injuries. We demand quality public goods, education, and health for all,” the GSEE statement said.

The strike meeting of ADEDY in Athens will take place at 11:00 am, at Korai Square, with basic demands – as stated in its statement – the restoration of the 13th and 14th salary, real wage increases, unfreezing of the wage scale of 2016-2017, and tax-free at 12,000 euros.

The call of PAME

PAME calls the workers to the Syntagma at 10:30 on May 1, which in its statement stresses, among other things, “On May 1 we commemorate the struggles and sacrifices of the working class for a life without poverty, wars and exploitation. We take the baton from the great struggles of the previous period and continue. We give our own answer to the criminal policy of the government and the other parties, capital, the EU, and the N.A.T.O.”

Thessaloniki

In Thessaloniki, the strike meeting is scheduled for 10:30 in front of the E.K.TH.

The buses of OASTH will be operated by security personnel on Thursday, May 1, following the decision of the organization’s employees to participate in the May Day mobilizations with a 24-hour strike. As OASΘ announces in a statement, the routes of the specially adapted vehicles for the service of people with disabilities, as well as the night line N1, which runs the route KTEL – Airport Night, will be carried out normally on 1/5.
