An earthquake measuring 6.1 on the Richter scale occurred at 6:19 AM on Thursday morning, according to the Geodynamic Institute. The quake struck in the sea area north of Crete, with its epicenter located 56 km north of Neapoli, Lasithi.

The focal depth of the earthquake was estimated at 60.3 kilometers.

The tremor was felt in several parts of Attica, while journalists in Crete reported a long-lasting vibration that caused concern due to the early hour. The quake was also noticed in the Peloponnese, the Cyclades islands, and even across Cyprus, particularly in the western regions, though it did not spark widespread alarm.

According to Health Minister Adonis Georgiadis, there were no issues at hospitals or health centers. A decision on school operations is pending as principals will inspect buildings for possible damage.

What Experts Say – Lekkàs, Gkánas, Tseléntis Weigh In

Efthymios Lekkas, president of the Earthquake Planning and Protection Organization (OASP), stated: “It had significant depth, which is important because it likely rules out a tsunami.”
He also assessed that major damage is not expected in Crete. Thanasis Gkánas, director of research at the Geodynamic Institute, said it was a typical intermediate-depth earthquake, far from Santorini. “Such earthquakes are felt over large distances,” he explained, noting that aftershocks will be minimal. Seismologist Akis Tseléntis confirmed on SKAI TV: “That was the main quake.”
He noted that the region has shown minor seismic activity for two years and added:
“It was felt throughout southern Greece because it occurred above the subducting slab of the Cretan tectonic plate, allowing the waves to travel far.”

Tselentis also predicted:

“Some aftershocks may follow—possibly around 5 Richter—but I don’t expect serious consequences.”

Aftershock Recorded

Fifteen minutes after the main 6.1 magnitude earthquake, a second tremor of 3.1 magnitude occurred in the same area, with an epicenter 53 km north of Neapoli, Lasithi and a focal depth of 59.4 km.
