The African dust created an eerie landscape in Heraklion and Chania, where the sky turned orange.
The orange blanket of dust that covered areas of Crete, combined with heat and rainfall, created a stifling atmosphere.
The Civil Protection Authority of the Region of Crete has issued recommendations for citizens to avoid unnecessary travel, especially individuals with respiratory or heart conditions, as well as children and the elderly.
Meteorologists estimate that the phenomenon will persist at least until Sunday evening, when the southeastern winds responsible for carrying the dust to Crete are expected to weaken.
