Greeks choose abroad for holidays

The tradition of summer holidays on the Greek islands is being overturned, as going to a Greek island and staying there can cost more than a trip to a European destination

Newsroom June 8 10:33

From the most economical trips to Istanbul or Budapest to the most expensive ones to New York or Beijing, Greeks are increasingly traveling abroad, overturning year after year the summer tradition of vacationing on the Greek islands.

Now, Greeks spend more on trips abroad than they do in their home country, and it’s no coincidence that in recent summers – and this summer, it seems – trips outside Greece have been particularly… popular.

All the more so when a trip to a Greek island can cost more than a trip to a European destination, some of which – e.g., in Central Europe – can be even cheaper during the summer. For those with more to spend, the choice at travel agencies for more distant destinations is now clearly more common, with the Greek travel public even unperturbed by Trump’s tariffs and the turbulence that has been created in general for European travel across the Atlantic.

Thus, quite a few Greeks… have seemed to be voting for New York in the high season of August 2025, since already in some of the major travel agencies, and due to the limited number of seats, the 10-day tours are selling out quickly.
