Ocean protection: Greece and Portugal join forces in a Pact of Art and Sustainability

At the edge of Astypalea in Greece and in Cascais and Cabo da Roca in Portugal, a unique and innovative project was brought to life. Its purpose: to highlight the importance of protecting marine ecosystems and to raise global awareness, guided by hope—not just as an idea, but as an action, a creative vision, and a collective effort

Newsroom June 10 10:45

From the “useless” plastic waste polluting the seas and oceans and threatening the global ecosystem, a vision was born.

With the support of the Portuguese Embassy in Athens, which embraced and backed the idea from the beginning, a director, a gifted pianist, a fashion designer, two municipalities (Astypalea in Greece and Cascais in Portugal), and two specialized recycling factories joined forces to create a symbolic work that transcends borders, languages, and time.

The result was impressive. The hope of the future—the children of Astypalea—were inspired by the initiative and volunteered to clean their island’s beaches, collecting plastic waste to be sent to factories in Portugal.

This was not merely an artistic event. It was a living narrative—a journey through music, fashion, ecology, tourism, and collaboration, uniting two countries and their creative energies into a global whisper of hope.

At the center of the project was a stunning 20-meter-long dress inspired by Portuguese azulejos—ornate ceramic tiles that tell stories through color and rhythm. The fabric was transformed into a moving piece of art by fashion designer Maria Vytinidou and brought to life by pianist Elena Xydia, who performed in breathtaking locations across Greece and Portugal. In Astypalea, with the Aegean Sea as a backdrop. In Cascais and Cabo da Roca, facing the Atlantic. With every note, the dress fluttered like a flag defending the future. It clothed the body and the action in sound, breathing life and emotion into the message.

The Portuguese Embassy in Athens served as a cultural, diplomatic, and artistic bridge, connecting creators who speak different languages but share the same goal: to remind the world that beauty can—and should—be sustainable, and that ocean protection concerns us all.

The Piano Project unites two countries, creators from the worlds of art and fashion, and serves a mission: to prove that art can change the world. From waste, luxury is born. From collaboration, the future is born.
