The planning of important infrastructure projects, which will upgrade the daily life of the citizens of Aspropyrgos and West Attica in general, was the focus of the working meeting between the Regional Governor Nikos Chardalias and the Mayor Yannis Ilias, held at the Aspropyrgos Town Hall.
During the meeting, issues relating to the progress of the Region’s projects already being implemented in the region were discussed at length, as well as actions to remove bureaucratic obstacles that delay the execution of necessary projects. Immediately after the meeting, the Regional Governor, accompanied by the Mayor, visited places where major projects are planned or are being implemented.
In particular, the Regional Governor visited the site where the construction of the 2nd General High School of Aspropyrgos is planned, a project that has been running for more than 20 years, with a budget of around 11 million euros. Mr. Chardalias stressed that the Region adopted from the first moment the request of the Municipality for prioritization of the project and proceeded to its inclusion in the “Attica Regional Development Plan” for immediate funding. He noted that the will of the regional authority is to proceed immediately with the signing of the relevant programmatic agreement, so that the project is delivered to the school community in the first half of 2028.
Subsequently, the Regional Governor was at Agrokipio, a 35-acre area owned by the Region of Attica, which was recently re-granted to the Municipality of Aspropyrgos for the creation of a recreational area. On the initiative and recommendation of Mr. Chardalias, the Regional Council of Attica recently approved the extension of the free concession of the area to the Municipality for 49 years. In fact, the Regional Governor expressed his intention to support in every possible way the upgrading of the Agro Garden, in order to offer the citizens of West Attica a truly modern and functional public space.
“Every time I visit West Attica, I come to provide solutions to years-old problems that, for all of us who come from popular districts, seem self-evident,” Mr.Hardalias said: “The balanced development of the municipalities of Attica will not be left to the mercy of the courts. We can no longer accept neighbourhoods without basic infrastructure. We are here to effectively support all our fellow citizens who have not found anything easy in their lives, who struggle every day.”
The Regional Governor stressed that the upgrading of the quality of life in West Attica is a high strategic goal and in this direction a holistic development program with a total budget of 546.3 million euros has been prepared – the largest program ever approved by the Region, which was even presented at the beginning of the term of office of the regional authority.
Skaramanga triple hub: “There is no room for any more waiting.”
In this context, Mr.Hardalias’ reference to the top, as he described it, project of the Skaramagas triple junction, which is expected to give breath to the whole of West Attica and the wider region, and which, now, after decades, is officially entering the implementation phase. “The Region has completed the relevant study and is closely monitoring the progress of efforts to include it in a specific funding protocol,” the Regional Governor noted and added: “For us, this project is a non-negotiable priority, and we have emphasized this publicly at every turn. There is no room for any more waiting. We await the immediate reflexes of the Ministry of Infrastructure and its new leadership. I am in a position to know that the tendering of the project has been approved by the Council of Ministers since January, and we now expect, without further delay, that the project will be tendered within 2025 with funds from the Ministry’s Public Investment Programme.”
Asked finally, regarding the scenarios of the acquisition of the Attica TV station, owned by the Municipality of Aspropyrgos, by the Region of Attica, Mr.Hardalias reiterated that this rumor is completely unsubstantiated and does not correspond at least to the truth. “Anything that contributes to free expression is extremely important. The work being done there is truly remarkable. As far as I am concerned, however, I have never sought to become a publisher or a television entrepreneur,” the Regional Governor noted.
For his part, the Mayor of Aspropyrgos, Giannis Elias, thanked the Regional Governor for the excellent cooperation in prioritizing the projects that are in immediate need of the residents of the region, while he made special mention of his actions in order to remove bureaucratic obstacles of many years. “In Aspropyrgos, right now, there are so many projects going on. We are confident that with the assistance and support of the Region, we will continue to do so. We want to thank the Region, because with its help we acquired an electric garbage truck from EDSNA, and we are waiting for the rest of the vehicles to strengthen our service,” Elias said.
The Regional Governor was accompanied by the Deputy Regional Governor of West Attica, Kleanthis Varelas, and the Special Secretary of the Region of Attica, Elena Rapti.
