Protothema.gr – Report from the Middle East: stories among the ruins of a never-ending crisis

Endless Middle East crisis: stories from the ruins

Yiannis Charamidis July 8 10:30

In the second episode of the documentary series “Medusa”, journalists Marinos Aleiferis and Giannis Charamidis travel across the Middle East — from Gaza, to the Lebanon-Syria border, and to Jerusalem. They explore a deep and ongoing crisis, revealing its many faces: military, political, humanitarian, and historical.

A Region Caught in Endless Conflict

Since October 7, 2023, when Hamas launched a brutal surprise attack in Israel, the region has been in turmoil. Israel responded with relentless airstrikes in Gaza, resulting in tens of thousands of deaths. The violence also spread to southern Lebanon, with Israel targeting Hezbollah forces.

Tensions have risen along the Syria-Israel border as well. The collapse of Assad’s long-standing rule and the fall of Syria’s so-called “empire of silence” added to the chaos. Israel, feeling trapped within its borders, continues to point to the asymmetric and constant threats in the region.

Most recently, a 12-day war between Israel and Iran marked the latest, and perhaps most dangerous, chapter in this ongoing conflict.

No Clear Winners

The documentary paints a grim picture. Entire neighborhoods in Gaza and Lebanon lie in ruins. But Israel hasn’t been spared either — Tel Aviv, Haifa, and Be’er Sheva also bear the scars of war. Death and destruction know no borders.

Every side claims victory, but the only true winner is time — and perhaps the historian of the future who will try to make sense of all this. In reality, as with every war, all sides are left wounded, regardless of political narratives.

More Than One War

What makes this conflict unique is its complexity. It’s not just one war — it’s many overlapping crises, all happening at once. The Medusa team brings these multiple layers to light through on-the-ground footage, interviews, and firsthand accounts.
