Kastoria: Bear cub killed by firearm

It was a male bear cub, approximately six months old and weighing 10.5 kilograms – The necropsy revealed it had received a direct shot from very close range

An unknown individual committed a heinous and illegal act in the village of Poria, in the Regional Unit of Kastoria. On the morning of Friday, July 11, 2025, a local resident discovered a wounded bear cub in very poor condition.

The Kastoria Forestry Department and a local veterinarian were immediately notified. Upon approaching the animal, the veterinarian and forestry officials found that the cub had a gunshot wound to its right shoulder blade.

Despite the veterinarian’s efforts to treat the injured animal, it died shortly after being transported to the clinic.

According to the environmental organization Callisto, it was a male bear cub, about six months old and weighing 10.5 kg.

The necropsy revealed an exit wound on the left shoulder blade, indicating a direct shot from very close range.

This is the third bear found dead in the Kastoria region over the past three months.
