A state of emergency was declared shortly after midnight on Saturday in Kolonaki, after an SUV crashed into the Brunello restaurant at the intersection of Patriarchou Ioakeim and Loukianou Streets.
Reports indicate at least 11 people were injured. They were transported by seven EKAV ambulances to KAT Hospital. Most are in stable condition, though one individual was seriously injured.
Sources say that the Mercedes SUV had no driver inside at the time of the crash. The most likely scenario is that the handbrake disengaged, causing the vehicle to roll, uproot a tree, and crash into the restaurant’s outdoor seating area, where customers were dining.
According to a witness speaking to protothema.gr, the last person to use the vehicle apparently forgot to engage the handbrake, allowing the SUV to roll downhill. It gathered speed, and due to its weight, it caused injuries to multiple pedestrians upon impact.
