Jim Lovell, NASA astronaut and commander of the ill-fated Apollo 13 space mission in 1970, has passed away at the age of 97.
Lovell and the other two astronauts were unable to land on the Moon due to an accident. Thanks to the heroic efforts of NASA engineers, they were able to return to Earth without a problem.
Their story was transferred to the cinema in 1995. Lovell was played by Tom Hanks.
In a post on X, NASA said four-time space veteran Lovell “inspired millions of people. His courage under pressure helped chart our path to the Moon and beyond – a journey that continues to this day.”
