European leaders today stressed their conviction that “only an approach that combines active diplomacy, support for Ukraine and pressure on the Russian Federation” can bring success in efforts to end the war in Ukraine, which was invaded by the Russian military in February 2022.
“We welcome (US President Donald) Trump‘s work to end the carnage in Ukraine” and “stand ready to support that work diplomatically, as well as by continuing our substantial military and economic support to Ukraine, including through the work of the coalition of the willing, and by maintaining and imposing restrictive measures on the Russian Federation,” a joint statement by European leaders said.
The text is endorsed by French President Emmanuel Macron, Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, German Chancellor Friedrich Murch, Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk, British Prime Minister Kir Sturm and Hartmut Sturm, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen and Finnish Prime Minister Alex Stump.
It was released ahead of a summit announced by US President Trump with his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin on Friday, August 15 in Alaska.
