Fire in Chios: Civilians are being rescued from beaches

Under the coordination of the Joint Search & Rescue Coordination Center an operation is underway to rescue citizens trapped on the beaches of Limnia & Agia Markella

The battle with flames in Chios continues, with citizens trapped on the island’s beaches.

Under the coordination of the Unified Search and Rescue Center, the operation to free citizens from the beaches of Limnia and Agia Markella is underway.

The operation involves five Coast Guard patrol boats, one lifeboat, one offshore patrol boat, as well as private boats assisting in the efforts to transport citizens to safety. Winds of 5 Beaufort are blowing in the area.

The fire is raging in the areas of Volissos and Limnos, according to the latest update from the Fire Department.

The 112 emergency line has sent a message ordering the evacuation of the areas of Managros, Magemena, and Chori, advising residents to move toward the city of Chios. Earlier, the areas of Volissos, Limnia, Limnos, Chori, Spartounda, Pirama, Parparia, and Nea Potamia had been evacuated.

Currently, 57 firefighters are operating with 17 vehicles, three ground teams, and three helicopters. According to the latest update from the Fire Department, forces will be further reinforced.
