The fifteenth of August at Meteora: Faith, tradition and a return to roots

Against the backdrop of the sacred rocks and historic monasteries, the Feast of the Dormition of the Theotokos is celebrated in a unique way—filled with devotion, emotion, and public participation

The 15th of August is not merely a major religious holiday. It is a day deeply rooted in the soul of the region. In the Municipality of Meteora, locals return to their villages, ancestral homes, and churches to venerate the Virgin Mary and reconnect with family, heritage, and tradition. From the plains to the mountain villages, church bells ring joyfully, and town squares fill with voices, songs, and smiles.

Religious Devotion and Honor to the Virgin Mary
The wider Kalambaka area is home to numerous sacred sites dedicated to the Dormition of the Theotokos, giving these days a profound spiritual significance. A highlight is the ancient Church of the Dormition of the Theotokos in Kalambaka, where, on the eve of the feast, a solemn vespers service is held with the chanting of the Virgin Mary’s Lamentations before her flower-adorned bier.

Monasteries and churches honoring the Dormition in the area include:

  • Holy Monastery of the Dormition of the Theotokos of Vytouma
  • Holy Monastery of the Dormition of the Theotokos of Stagiades
  • Holy Monastery of Chrysinou
  • Panagia Kanaliotissa in the Kanalaki area of Meteora
  • Monastery of the Dormition of the Theotokos of Kastraki (“Trani Ekklisia”)
  • Old Monastery of Galaktotrophousa of Anthousa
  • Historic Monastery of Limpochovos (Koutsoufliani)

Many parishes also celebrate the Virgin Mary, including those of Acheliniada, Gavros, Theotokos, Stagiades, Megali Kerassia, Kalomira, Ambelochori, Matoneri, Anthousa, Kallirroi, Glykomilia, and more.

Notable icons of the Virgin Mary in the region:

  • Panagia “Rodon to Amaranton” at the Holy Monastery of Great Meteoron, dating to 1790
  • Panagia Glykofilousa – Kanaliotissa, a 14th-century icon carried annually for veneration to Kanalia, Karditsa (August 6 – September 6)
  • Panagia Mesitria at the Holy Monastery of Varlaam
  • The despotic icon of the Virgin Mary at the Monastery of Vytouma, revered for her intercession

Mayor of Meteora Lefteris Avramopoulos told the Athens–Macedonian News Agency:

“The 15th of August in the Municipality of Meteora is a celebration of deep faith and emotion. Our churches and monasteries are filled with people returning to their villages and ancestral homes to honor the Virgin Mary and reconnect with their roots. These are days when religious devotion meets tradition and community fellowship. We welcome, with respect and love, all visitors who choose to experience this unique event in our land. In every village, in every church, and in every square, the heart of our homeland beats strongly.”
