George Mazonakis will be released soon, there was nothing to justify his confinement, says his lawyer

The singer, who says he is "bitter and indignant" after his incarceration in a public psychiatric facility, denounces a method organised by his relatives

Newsroom August 16 08:58

Singer George Mazonakis denounces a scheme allegedly organized by relatives, declaring himself “bitter and indignant” after being placed in a public psychiatric facility last Thursday (August 14), where he remains.

According to his lawyer, George Merkoulidis, the singer will “take the microphone as agreed with Fever in September.”

When asked if Mazonakis would be released soon, Mr. Merkoulidis replied that he will be out on Monday, adding: “He will be released immediately, there is nothing psychiatric. Absolutely nothing happened—no fight or incident to justify this outcome.”

Regarding Mazonakis’ relationship with his family, his lawyer revealed: “For the last two and a half years, George has had no physical contact with his close relatives. The only meeting took place four months ago with his sister, brother-in-law, and their lawyer at my house, where some issues were raised but no solution was found. We stated clearly that we would see them in court.”

Meanwhile, about a month ago, his sister attempted to visit him at his home, but the singer refused to meet her.

“We were preparing in September to file lawsuits for serious criminal offenses committed by his sister, of a felony nature,” the lawyer further revealed.

Confinement procedure

Regarding the confinement itself, Merkoulidis explained it followed a request made by Mazonakis’ relatives:
“The law allows any citizen to appeal to the prosecutor and claim that a relative poses a potential danger to others or to themselves. In such cases, confinement is mandatory and no consent from the alleged patient is required. The prosecutor accepts the petition, and the person must be taken to a public facility to be evaluated.”

Family dispute

In May 2024, it became known that Mazonakis was involved in a bitter legal battle with his sister Vasso, who had previously been his closest collaborator and the person he trusted most over the years. Their deep rift also distanced him from his parents, who, as was reported then, had not taken his side.

Even before this, Mazonakis had already withdrawn from friends and acquaintances, significantly narrowing his social circle. While in the nightlife scene he had gained a reputation as a “difficult” partner, his successful television comeback on The Voice (where he was expected to continue in the new season starting filming in September) brought him back closer to the public and had a positive effect on his morale.
