The two leaders reiterated their commitment to strengthen their strategic cooperation, at a time when India is seeking to consolidate ties with other countries.
Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and French President Emmanuel Macron discussed today the efforts being made to achieve peace in Ukraine and the Middle East, New Delhi announced.
“I had a very good discussion with my friend, President Macron,” Modi said in a post on social media. “We exchanged views on efforts aimed at the peaceful resolution of conflicts in Ukraine and Western Asia” (i.e., the Middle East), he added.
Macron referred to the recent Washington summit as well as the situation in Gaza.
The two leaders also reiterated their commitment to intensify strategic cooperation, at a time when India is seeking to strengthen its ties with other countries as its relations with the United States deteriorate. U.S. President Donald Trump has threatened to increase tariffs on Indian products from 25% to 50% if India continues purchasing oil from Russia. These purchases have allowed India to save billions of dollars but have angered Trump, as they represent a significant source of revenue for Moscow.
The phone call between Modi and Macron took place while Indian Foreign Minister Subrahmanyam Jaishankar was meeting his Russian counterpart, Sergey Lavrov, in Moscow, where they discussed trade issues.
