Von der Leyen: “Our critical infrastructure is at risk” over drones at Copenhagen Airport

Europe will respond to this threat with strength and determination, says the European Commission President

Newsroom September 23 05:51

European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen stated that the drones which halted flights at Denmark’s main airport in Copenhagen were part of a “pattern of continuous challenges at our borders.”

“Our critical infrastructure is at risk,” von der Leyen said in a post on social media platform X, adding that the incidents are still under investigation. “And Europe will respond to this threat with strength and determination,” she concluded.

It is recalled that the airports of Copenhagen and Oslo were shut down on Monday due to the presence of unidentified drones.

Danish police also said today that the drones which forced the closure of the country’s main airport yesterday appeared to be operated by “a skilled pilot,” adding that no suspects have been identified.

“We concluded that this was someone we would call a capable operator,” police chief Jens Jespersen told reporters regarding the drones sighted over Copenhagen.

“It is someone who has the skills, the will, and the tools to demonstrate in this way,” Jespersen added, noting that it is still too early to say whether the incidents in Denmark and Norway are connected.

Copenhagen airport was closed for four hours when two or three large drones were observed flying very close, officials said, while Oslo airport was closed for three hours after two drones were spotted, according to local police. The Norwegian capital’s airport reopened today at 03:15 local time (04:15 Greece time).

Jespersen stated that the drones in Denmark came from different directions with flashing lights before disappearing after hours.

Flights were diverted to other airports, and disruptions to air travel are expected to continue today until normal operations are restored, the two airports announced.

Danish and Norwegian authorities are working together on the incidents, police official Jakob Hansen emphasized, clarifying that both the military and intelligence services have been mobilized. The origin of the drones, which disappeared without being intercepted, remains unknown, Hansen admitted.
