Mitsotakis to Bloomberg: From January 1st, citizens will see an increase in their incomes – Defense must be a priority for the EU

The Prime Minister speaks about domestic and international developments

Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis gave an interview to Bloomberg Editor-in-Chief John Micklethwait, stressing that the government will continue to raise citizens’ incomes, while the main goal of New Democracy remains securing a parliamentary majority in the next elections.

The prime minister spoke about the Greek economy, noting that it is growing, the minimum wage has increased, and incomes are also rising for the middle class. He said that as of January 1, citizens will see an increase in their incomes with the implementation of the tax cuts that were announced at the Thessaloniki International Fair.

He also stated that it is likely Greece will have a primary surplus in 2025. Continuing, he said that within the European Union collective growth must be guaranteed. “We need to look at the bigger picture,” the prime minister said, noting that difficult decisions must be taken at the European level.

The prime minister then added, “If we are talking about a banking union, then there should be no objections to a foreign bank acquiring a Greek one. That means it has confidence in the prospects and course of the Greek economy.” Responding to a related question, he said that with regard to Defense, important decisions must be made, which will require collective cooperation.

The only way to tackle the cost-of-living crisis, he stressed, is by strengthening disposable income. “This is the only way to fight it. These policies are long-term,” said the prime minister, noting that this is an issue clearly visible within the EU.

Regarding the next elections, the prime minister stated, “We have a wide lead in the polls. Our goal is to win a parliamentary majority; we have done it twice, and there were skeptics who doubted we would succeed in the previous elections.” He went on to say that the government will continue its work, delivering on its commitments to citizens, including improving the National Health System. As the prime minister noted, “If we do these things, then we have a strong chance of achieving our goals. However, if citizens hold a different opinion, then we must respect their decision.”
